A Flavorful Day in Otavalo: Cooking, Culture, and Connection
Our day began with the comforting scent of freshly baked treats as we visited a traditional biscuit factory just outside Otavalo. There, we indulged in crispy bizcochos, paired perfectly with creamy cheese and a rich, steaming cup of hot chocolateโa classic local combination that instantly warmed both body and soul.
As we made our way towards Otavalo, we stopped at several scenic spots to capture breathtaking photos of the Andean landscapeโmajestic mountains, lush valleys, and skies that seemed to stretch endlessly.
Upon arriving in Otavalo, our first stop was the famous Plaza de los Ponchos, a vibrant marketplace overflowing with colors, textures, and the lively energy of local artisans. Surrounded by handcrafted textiles, woven ponchos, and intricate jewelry, we truly felt immersed in the heart of Otavaloโs culture.
Next, we continued our journey to Kawsaymi, a beautiful space rooted in tradition and sustainability. There, we explored their organic garden, hand-picking fresh vegetables and herbs for the meal we were about to prepare.
The highlight of the day was a hands-on cooking masterclass led by a local expert, where we learned to create a delicious three-course lunch, including a traditional ajรญ sauce made entirely from scratch.
The best part? Sitting down together to enjoy the meal we had prepared with our own handsโflavors made even richer by the stories, laughter, and shared experience of the day.
Otavalo gave us more than a mealโit gave us a deeper connection to Ecuadorian culture through taste, tradition, and togetherness.
